In order to celebrate
the “World Hepatitis Day”, on July 28th, the Department of Health of the State
of São Paulo scheduled several healthcare and awareness activities, including access
of information, prevention of infection and hepatitis serological testing in
the Capital.
The voluntary
actions happens from July 15th to 27th at “Casa das Rosas”, “Palácio do Governo”,
“Centro de Convenções”, “Terminal Jabaquara” (bus/subway station) and Paróquia
São Joaquim”(church), at Cambuci.
The campaign
includes HBV/HCV prevention guidance and serological testing for staff members and
individuals. (Check above the full schedule).
On July 25th,
an estimated 200 healthcare professionals shall participate the “Word Hepatitis
Day Assembly on Viral Hepatitis B and C.
The event is intended
to people who work in healthcare departments and are interested in heighten
their knowledge about the topic.
The campaign
activities are designed to encourage healthcare prevention, since the number of
people diagnosed with HCV infection has increased in the last years, rising
from 4,5 thousand in 2014 to 7,6 thousand in the last year.
On the other hand,
the number of HBV detection have reduced in 3,7% in the same period, from 3,2
thousand in the last three years to 3 thousand diagnosed cases in 2016.
“The initiative
aims to bring awareness on viral hepatitis, in order to prevent disease and highlight
the importance of early diagnosis”, says Sirlene Caminada, director of the “Viral
Hepatitis Programme” from the “Epidemiological
Surveillance Agency of the State of São Paulo”.
The HBV/HCV-serological
testing will take place in partnership with Paróquia São Joaquim (church) and
EMTU (São Paulo Metropolitan Urban Transport Enterprise).
Hepatitis is
a liver inflammation and can be caused by different viruses, use of medications,
alcohol and other drugs, besides autoimmune, metabolic and genetic diseases.
There are
multiple strains (genotypes) of HCV viruses and they are different from HBV
virus. The most common mode of infection are sexual relationships, unsafe
injection practices (syringe and needles), unsafe healthcare (razors, nail
plies and similar objects).
Hepatitis B also
can be spread from mother to a child at birth.
